Bed Cooling Devices

Bed Cooling Devices are a new type of consumer products that do exactly what you’d expect: they keep your bed cool at night. All of them allow you to dial in the temperature you want and most including different temperatures for different sides of the bed so you and you bedmate won’t argue over the settings. Some offer advanced settings to change the temperature over the night so you can have it colder when you go to bed the then warm up just before you get up. Still others offer sleep tracking features.
Of all the health purchases I’ve recently made this one is my favorite. It’s tremendously improved my sleep and I miss it whenever I’m away from home. Just about every heath guru who’s chimed in on these devices from Peter Attia to Tim Ferris have gushed about how good they are. Trust me on this. You should at least try one. They come in three types:
- Integrated Mattress – a mattress with the cooler built in.
- Mattress Pad – a pad the rests on your existing mattress.
- Undercover fan – a cooling device that blows air under your sheets.
My personal experience is with the mattress pad variety and I still think it makes the most sense from a cost and versatility standpoint. My product of choice is the Chilipad Cube because it’s dirt simple. No tracking, no timer, no internet connectivity. Just simple controls on the device which are repeated one-for-one on a remote. Perfectly K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid).
A few final notes on bed coolers:
- They make some noise. If noise is an issue for you make sure you look into reviews and get one of the quieter models.
- They’re no substitute for air conditioning. If the AC goes out on a hot summer day your bed cooler won’t save you.
